Magna International (MG) has released its Breakthrough Lighting solution, showcased on a vehicle’s thermoplastic lift gate.

The company specializes in vehicle exteriors and lighting and looks at new ways to personalize and allow consumers to interact with their vehicles.

Breakthrough Lighting technology can be used on thermoplastic material surfaces, including polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyolefins. The desired lighting effects are achievable on various exterior panels through materials, coatings, and processing advancement. Magna plans to have the technology ready for production next year.

“Magna’s Breakthrough Lighting enables increased design freedom and features more options for brand differentiation that can elevate our customers’ experiences,” Grahame Burrow, President of Magna Exteriors, said.

Magna stated its competitive advantage is its ability to create solutions leveraging a full-systems approach. Combining the company’s in-house capabilities for exteriors and lighting early in the vehicle development and design process can synergize with more holistic product development.

“As the industry builds significant momentum around electrified and autonomous vehicles, we expect more desire for developments like this that are seamlessly integrated into exterior surfaces,” Burrow said.

Breakthrough Lighting is designed to enhance the overall appearance and function of lighting by refining communication between the user, the vehicle and its surroundings including key features such as:

Breakthrough hidden-until-lit light effects, communicative, functional, and decorative lighting, moulded-in styling features and intricate textured surfaces, and an extensive colour palette available, programmable to customer specifications.

Magna International Inc. (MG) is up 2.55 per cent and is trading at $83.51 per share at 2:49 p.m. ET.
