Apple trades near record highs ahead of its foldable iPhone debut, while an Amazon cargo plane crash in Miami and oil gains move markets.

Markets are mixed to start the week as investors brace for Apple’s high-profile hardware event and keep an eye on inflation data and elevated oil prices. The TSX is down 0.42% to 36,361.21, while the TSX Venture Index is holding up better, edging up 0.05% to 965.86. In the U.S., the Dow is down 0.21% and the Nasdaq is off 0.22%, with S&P 500 futures slipping as oil prices and inflation data keep traders cautious, while London’s FTSE 100 bucks the trend, up 0.28%.

Oil is a standout mover, with WTI up 1.31%, while gold is down slightly at 0.22% and Bitcoin has pulled back 1.85% to just above C$107,000. Copper is also firmer, up 1.84%. The Canadian dollar is stronger against the U.S. dollar, pound, and euro, but softer against the yen, which touched a seven-month high near ¥153 as a Bank of Japan rate hike is nearly fully priced in. Trade tensions are also back in focus after Canada’s retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on $20 billion in U.S. goods took effect as talks with Washington stall.
