Nvidia's $13B Hugging Face buy and Tesla's Cybercab launch headline a mixed session as markets digest a strong US jobs report.

Markets are mixed this morning as investors digest a stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs report showing 162,000 new jobs and unemployment holding at 4.1%, which has revived talk of a possible rate hike. The TSX is down 0.33% to 36,512.78, and the TSX Venture Index is down 1.01% to 962.16. The Dow is off a modest 0.13% and the FTSE 100 is down 0.10%, while the Nasdaq bucks the trend, up 0.44% as tech strength continues to test the rally ahead of the payrolls data.

Oil is sliding 1.87% even as record-high U.S. diesel prices push up transportation costs across the economy, while gold is down 0.93% and Bitcoin has pulled back 1.63% to just above C$110,000. The Canadian dollar is softer against the U.S. dollar, pound, euro, and yen, and Canada’s trade surplus narrowed to $769 million on weaker gold exports. Closer to home, Montreal home sales fell 13% in August as the market continues to rebalance.
