The TSX opened sharply lower this morning, down 1.4%, as weakness in energy and materials dragged the index into the red. Falling oil prices weighed heavily on sentiment, with WTI down more than 2% at US$58 a barrel, while copper slipped over 3%.

In the U.S., markets moved higher as strong bank earnings boosted investor confidence. The Dow Jones climbed 1.3% and the Nasdaq gained 2.2%, led by financials and technology. Goldman Sachs shares jumped after reporting a sharp profit increase, driven by renewed dealmaking activity.
