TSX and TSXV rise as TSMC boosts chip stocks and Meta launches a new AI model. Strategy sells Bitcoin, copper climbs, oil slips and gas jumps.

Markets are mixed today as Canadian equities push higher while U.S. technology stocks soften. The TSX is up 0.68%, while the TSX Venture Index is surging 3.03%, showing strong Canadian risk appetite despite renewed trade and geopolitical concerns. In the U.S., the Dow is down 0.18% and the Nasdaq is lower by 0.29%, as investors digest a busy AI news cycle, upcoming inflation data, and uncertainty around Middle East peace talks.

Commodities are also mixed. Oil is lower on the market board even as headlines point to renewed tension around the Strait of Hormuz, while gold is slightly lower after recent volatility. Copper is higher, supported by strength in chip and industrial demand, and natural gas is up more than 2%. Bitcoin is slightly lower in Canadian-dollar terms, even as crypto-linked headlines remain active following Strategy’s move to raise cash.
