Construction is underway on a 17,000-square-metre expansion at MDA Space’s (TSX:MDA) satellite production facility in Québec.

Once complete, it will be the world’s largest high-volume manufacturing facility in its satellite class, with capacity to deliver up to two MDA Aurora digital satellites a day.

Following Telesat’s selection of MDA as the primary satellite contractor for the Telesat Lightspeed constellation, an initial order of 198 Telesat Lightspeed satellites, powered by MDA’s Aurora technology, will be manufactured at the new facility. Telesat is the first among several MDA satellite customers transitioning to next-generation digital constellations, as the demand for space-based broadband networks and direct-to-device connectivity grows.

With the global space economy projected to reach US$1.8 trillion in the next decade, the new facility is designed to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The production line is anticipated to be operational in the latter half of 2025.

“The global satellite market is at an inflection point as satellite operators and customers shift to digital solutions like MDA Aurora that offer greater performance and flexibility at a significantly lower cost,” Mike Greenley, MDA Space’s chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Our strategic investments in expanding our satellite production facility and team are ideally timed to solidify our market leadership position and expand the export and growth opportunities for the Canadian space industry in Québec and across the country.”

“Lightspeed, Telesat and MDA are designing and manufacturing the largest space program in Canadian history – creating thousands of jobs, growing our economy and getting high-speed internet to Canadians,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau added. “Together, we’re putting Canada, Canadian innovation and talent at the forefront of a new global opportunity.”

The Canadian technology provider to the global space industry, MDA specializes in robotics, satellite systems and geointelligence for the global space industry with a track record spanning more than 55 years and more than 450 missions.

MDA Space (TSX:MDA) last traded at C$16.44 per share, and its stock has risen 42.71 per cent since the year began.
