Quarterhill (TSX:QTRH) subsidiary International Road Dynamics (IRD) has won a five-year, C$13.7 million contract with the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation.

The contract covers continuous traffic monitoring (CTM), data collection and maintenance across 91 CTM sites statewide, with more to be added as the contract term progresses. IRD will provide its iTHEIA AI Classification System to process video data at the roadside, representing its first deployment in statewide CTM.

Data to be collected includes traffic volume, speed, vehicle classification, as well as weight data, all of which will be available to HDOT and the public through a web portal and used for traffic planning, noise studies, changes in highway travel patterns, and assessments of the impact of heavy vehicles on state roads.

IRD’s work will “further the HDOT’s mission to provide a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable inter-modal transportation system that ensures the mobility of people and goods, thus fostering economic development and quality of life,” according to a statement released Wednesday.

“This contract highlights continued momentum at IRD and our enforcement solutions unit, which has had a strong year so far in 2023,” Chuck Myers, CEO of Quarterhill, said in the news release. “Long-term relationships, such as the one we have with HDOT, provide us with a solid base from which we can introduce new enforcement solutions that further help customers meet their transportation management goals.”

“IRD takes immense pride in our 25-year-long association with HDOT, one that has greatly contributed to the enduring success of their traffic data collection program. With the addition of the iTHEIA video-based vehicle classification solution and IRD’s advanced weigh-in-motion and virtual weigh station systems, we are addressing the needs of HDOT today and into the future,” Rish Malhotra, IRD’s CEO, said in the news release.
