Vitalist (TSXV:VITA) is announcing the launch of a new Reebok smartwatch deploying its VitalOS operating system, which is designed to support consumer brands interested in expanding into the wearables market, while sidestepping the costs and constraints of proprietary ecosystems.
The smartwatch features a low-power architecture to optimize battery performance and was developed within an estimated 6-9 month cycle, all while allowing Reebok to customize the product and benefit from hardware-agnostic scalability.
VitalOS is built with partner MicroEJ’s virtualization technology, MicroEJ VEE, and its wearable product, VEE Wear, which are part of a broader platform that currently runs more than 400 million connected devices globally.
According to Tuesday’s news release, the companies believe they have “created a foundation that streamlines the cost, speed and scale of wearable development,” paving the way for established brands to step into the space.
The news follows a five-year licensing agreement between Vitalist and Authentic Brands Group on behalf of Reebok signed in May.
Management commentary
“VitalOS is designed to give brands greater control over their wearable product experience,” Kalvie Legat, chief executive officer (CEO) of Vitalist, said in a statement. “Many companies entering the wearable category require alignment with existing platforms. Our collaboration with MicroEJ supports an approach that enables companies like Reebok to develop devices that reflect their design priorities and customer needs.”
“We designed VitalOS to be future-proof from day one,” added Sean Croft, chief product officer at Vitalist. “Whether it’s watches today or new form factors tomorrow, brands can scale their experiences seamlessly across generations. The platform is intended to support extended product lifecycles and efficient software update processes.”
“VEE Wear brings to VitalOS the same proven foundation that already powers millions of embedded and IoT devices worldwide,” concluded Fred Rivard, CEO of MicroEJ. “By combining ultra-low power efficiency, reliability and scalability, VEE Wear enables VitalOS to support wearables designed for efficient power consumption and scalability across device generations. Our collaboration with Vitalist provides brands with an additional option when developing connected devices.”
