Canada’s top stock index didn’t see much movement on Thursday as traders weighed fresh bank earnings and monitored continuing uncertainty related to tensions in the Middle East. At the same time, Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said Ottawa welcomed the US move to withdraw its stance on issues involving French language and culture.

South of the border, US markets advanced after upbeat earnings from Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and several prominent technology firms lifted market sentiment.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.16 cents US compared to 72.05 cents US on Wednesday.

US crude futures traded US$1.60 higher at US$83.83 a barrel, and the Brent contract rose US$2.30 to US$89.97 a barrel.

The price of gold was up US$9.43 to US$4,606.81.

In world markets, the Nikkei was down 130.18 points to ¥66,131.98, the Hang Seng was down 87.23 points to HK$25,565.74, the FTSE was down 85.58 points to ₤10,792.54, but the DAX was up 81.28 points to €26,367.24.
