Canadian stocks were subdued on Monday as market participants monitored tensions in the Middle East, digested corporate earnings updates, and awaited significant US economic reports scheduled for later this week.
Tehran said negotiations with Oman on new shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz were approaching completion but stressed that reopening the strategically important waterway remains contingent on meeting several US requirements.
Barrick stock (TSX:ABX/NYSE:B) fell nearly 7 per cent after its Q2 profits missed estimates.
South of the border, US markets declined given the rising uncertainty over whether the US and Iran can reach a lasting settlement to their ongoing dispute.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.73 cents US compared to 71.35 cents US on Friday.
US crude futures traded US$3.96 higher at US$82.14 a barrel, and the Brent contract rose US$4.15 to US$87.70 a barrel.
The price of gold was up US$49.94 to US$4,391.30.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 1,363.51 points to ¥66,970.22, the Hang Seng was up 269.46 points to HK$25,937.49, the FTSE was down 38.95 points to ₤10,862.50, and the DAX was up 4.43 points to €26,323.88.
