Canada’s leading stock index moved lower on Friday after comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh unsettled investors. Meanwhile, Canadian ambassador to Washington Mark Wiseman said Thursday that Canada would not accept a trade agreement with the United States unless it safeguarded the country’s automotive assembly and parts manufacturing sector.

Expectations for a September Federal Reserve rate hike strengthened after Warsh said recent inflation readings did not represent a shift in the overall trend. He added that the central bank still has additional work ahead before gaining confidence that inflation is returning to its 2 per cent target.
