Canada’s main stock index scored its latest all-time record high on Friday, driven by gains in the materials sector. Investor optimism about a potential interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve in the near future helped offset worries about the US government shutdown.

Meanwhile, the Dow and S&P reached new highs as Wall Street looked set to close the week with solid gains, despite the ongoing government shutdown. The shutdown has caused a halt in the release of key economic data, including the September non-farm payrolls report, which was delayed due to the Labor Department suspending most of its operations.
