The TSX saw choppy trading on Wednesday, supported by strength in mining shares but weighed down by weakness in the energy sector. Investors also kept a close eye on elevated bond yields and escalating conflict in the Middle East.

As expected, the Bank of Canada left its benchmark overnight rate at 2.25 per cent. The central bank continues to take a measured approach, balancing signs of broader economic recovery against inflation risks and uncertainty linked to trade tensions with the US.

South of the border, US markets were little changed as higher bond yields continued to pressure sentiment. Concerns that rising oil prices could reignite inflation persisted, while the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield reached its highest point since November 2023.
