Canadian equities tumbled lower on Monday as investors reacted to escalating geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran and a softer inflation report at home. According to Statistics Canada, annual inflation eased to 2.8 per cent in June from 3.2 per cent in May, while the seasonally adjusted CPI edged down 0.1 per cent month over month.

South of the border, US markets delivered low results as oil prices fluctuated in response to ongoing military exchanges between the US and Iran, which entered their ninth day. Gains among chipmakers helped boost sentiment and limited broader market weakness.

British markets ended slightly lower after the country chose a new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.
