@ the Bell: Stocks gain as weak jobs data eases rate concerns

Just as Canada takes its Thanksgiving break, TSX stocks regained momentum on Friday, posting widespread gains as disappointing employment data reinforced market expectations that the Bank of Canada will keep borrowing costs unchanged at its upcoming policy meeting.

Meanwhile, US markets recovered from losses recorded a day earlier, after a lacklustre revenue report from OpenAI tempered some of the excitement that has fuelled the artificial intelligence rally. Telecom stocks struggled following SpaceX’s (NASDAQ:SPCX) spectrum acquisition, which raised competitive concerns across the sector.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.09 cents US compared to 70.27 cents US on Thursday.

US crude futures traded $0.04 lower at US$91.45 a barrel, and the Brent contract lost $0.21 to US$104.10 a barrel.

The price of gold was up US$55.05 to US$4,186.57.

In world markets, the Nikkei was down 11.19 points to ¥69,030.92, the Hang Seng was up 425.56 points to HK$24,211.35, the FTSE was up 110.45 points to ₤10,552.05, and the DAX was up 280.30 points to €25,087.27.
