Canada’s main stock index finished lower on Friday as investors weighed May economic growth data, although solid corporate earnings helped limit losses. Statistics Canada reported that GDP increased 0.3 per cent during the month, reflecting expansion in both goods-producing and services-producing industries. TMX Group (TSX:X) also reported higher second-quarter net income following Thursday’s market close. The TSX was in a slightly worse position, about 170 points lower than Monday’s open.
In the United States, stocks rose as Wall Street staged a recovery. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) climbed after posting better-than-expected second-quarter revenue, driven by strength in its cloud-computing operations and bolstering confidence in continued AI spending. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares edged lower despite reporting fiscal third-quarter revenue that exceeded expectations and a 22 per cent increase in iPhone sales, as weaker-than-anticipated services revenue offset the positive results.
