TSX and Nasdaq rise as Amazon jumps on AI and cloud strength, Apple falls on weak guidance, Telus cuts its dividend, oil climbs and Bitcoin slips.

Markets are moving higher overall as investors rotate back into technology and AI-linked names following a volatile stretch. The TSX is up 0.49%, while the TSX Venture Index is higher by 1.97%, supported by stronger domestic sentiment after Canada’s GDP beat expectations and the rebound showed signs of gathering steam. In the U.S., the Dow is nearly flat but positive, while the Nasdaq is up 0.50% as traders respond to a major AI comeback and strength across cloud and chip-related names. London’s FTSE 100 is the outlier, down 0.49%.

Commodities are mixed. Oil is up 1.30% as major energy producers continue to benefit from elevated prices tied to U.S. and Iran tensions, while copper, gold, and natural gas are all lower. Bitcoin is also under pressure, down 1.79% in Canadian-dollar terms, even as broader equity risk appetite improves. Currency markets remain active, with the loonie stronger against the pound, euro, and Australian dollar, but weaker against the U.S. dollar and yen.

  • Apple tumbles despite solid earnings: Apple (TSX:AAPL), the consumer technology giant behind the iPhone, Mac, and services ecosystem, fell after issuing a weaker revenue forecast and warning that rising memory costs are starting to pressure margins. CEO Tim Cook flagged an “increasing impact” from the global memory shortage, even though earnings were solid.
  • Amazon surges on AI and cloud strength: Amazon (TSX:AMZN), the e-commerce, cloud computing, and AI infrastructure giant, jumped after second-quarter earnings beat expectations. Investors focused on AWS momentum and the company’s AI and chip businesses, which reportedly reached a $25-billion run rate.
  • Telus cuts dividend and posts Q2 loss: Telus (TSX:T), the Canadian telecom and digital services provider, reported a second-quarter loss and slashed its dividend as new CEO Victor Dodig takes the helm.
