Volt Carbon Technologies (TSXV:VCT) has revealed initial test results from its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery employing its internally developed electrolyte.

The Calgary-based company stated in a news release that the batteries were manufactured at the company subsidiary’s facility in Guelph, Ontario.

The test’s findings represent a significant step in moving forward with Solid UltraBattery’s, the company’s subsidiary, advancement of high-energy LFP technology.

LFP batteries are a type of lithium-ion battery that uses lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material and a graphitic carbon electrode with a metallic backing as the anode.

“Our ongoing investment in talent and equipment is guiding Solid UltraBattery towards an exciting journey in energy storage development,” V-Bond Lee, CEO of Volt Carbon Technologies, said in a statement. “We’re fully committed to advancing and bringing our technology to market.”

Solid Ultra Battery has been working on developing a lithium-metal LFP battery to achieve density, which it believes it has achieved an industry-leading 280Wh/kg for this particular cathode type.

Volt Carbon Technologies believes this technology can potentially impact battery competitiveness for electric vehicles and battery-powered devices by offering alternatives that remove cobalt and nickel.

Moving forward, the company’s goal is to surpass 800 cycles and achieve an 80 per cent capacity threshold by the end of the year.

Volt Carbon Technologies has specific interests in energy storage and green energy creation.

Shares of Volt Carbon Technologies (TSXV:VCT) are unchanged at C$0.07.
