Selkirk Copper Mines (TSXV:SCMI) recently announced a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for its past-producing Minto copper, gold and silver project in the Yukon, detailing an after-tax net present value of C$494 million, more than twice the company’s C$212 million market cap at the time of writing.
This article is a journalistic opinion piece which has been written based on independent research. It is intended to inform investors and should not be taken as a recommendation or financial advice.
These figures, using conservative base-case metals prices, represent production of 377 million pounds of copper, 225,000 ounces of gold and 1.39 million ounces of silver over a 13-year mine life. Capex costs of C$186 million would be recovered only 1.9 years after first production.
The company’s founding partnership between Selkirk First Nation and the Frank Giustra-backed Fiore Group remains focused on a diligent plan of exploration, resource expansion and mine development work geared toward a production restart in 2028, subject to permitting and the completion of a feasibility study.
Selkirk’s nearly finalized 50,000-metre phase-2 drilling program, which recently added more high-grade results, was not factored into the PEA’s economics.
The price of copper is widely expected to follow a long-term uptrend thanks to the metal’s critical roles across the industrial landscape, including AI and the renewable energy transition.
Leadership commentary
“This is a robust, complete and comprehensive review of all aspects of the mine design, processing plant and infrastructure engineering. All costs have been built up from first principles over the capex, opex and susex periods. Certain pre-capex costs are not included in the PEA economic model. We estimate these costs to be about C$20 million,” Scott Fulton, Vice President of Engineering at Selkirk Copper Mines, said in Thursday’s news release. “A 13-year mine plan is a good start. There is potential to the north and south of the Minto mine that I believe could turn this into a multi-decade project.”
“The level of detail developed in the PEA study, including integrated mine plans, equipment definition and detailed capital, operating and sustaining cost estimations, has increased our confidence in our ability to deliver on our focused restart timeline,” added M. Colin Joudrie, Selkirk’s President and Chief Executive Officer.
