ZEN Graphene Solutions (ZEN) has contributed to a C$780,000 Alliance Grant which has been awarded to Dr Mohammad Arjmand.

The company was responsible for $300,000 of the total amount, which consisted of cash and in-kind contributions. The other $480,000 of the grant was provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

The grant was made to Professor Arjmand, Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Advanced Materials and Polymer Engineering, and his Nanomaterials and Polymer Nanocomposites Laboratory (NPNL).

Dr Arjmand will use the funds to purchase new equipment for the nanomaterials and polymer engineering research laboratory. These purchases will include tensile testing equipment, a freeze dryer, and a differential scanning calorimeter.

ZEN Graphene has been collaborating with Dr Arjmand on multiple projects involve graphene nanomaterials. Using the Alliance Grant, the company and NPNL will work on three major initiatives.

These include the chemical and electrochemical synthesis of graphene quantum dots, eco-friendly synthesis of graphene, chemical remediation of remnant chemicals, and development of molded and 3D-printed multifunctional graphene/polymer nanocomposites.

ZEN Graphene’s Head of Research, Dr Colin van der Kuur, commented on the company’s present and future collaboration with NPNL.

“Dr Arjmand’s lab has demonstrated the ability to understand the demands of industry, and his lab has been instrumental in supporting the technological success we have had in our Guelph lab,” he said.

“I fully expect that this four-year agreement will continue to bring significant innovation to ZEN and will result in the growth of our IP portfolio and business opportunities,” he added.
