Cannabix (BLO) has filed a provisional patent for a contactless alcohol breathalyzer for vehicles.

The company developed the device after being approached by a Tier 1 global automobile parts manufacturer sourcing such a technology.

It has finalized the breathalyzer’s first proof of concept prototype but has not entered into any contractual relationship at this time.

Potential applications include integration with interlock systems, personal vehicles, heavy-duty equipment, watercraft and workplace monitoring.

The device and its testing method are still in the preapproval stage and the company is not making any claims with regards to viability for commercial use.

In the United States, the November 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed by the House of Representatives called for new cars to come equipped with technology that will detect alcohol in breath. The legislation directs the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to set new safety standards within three years for impaired driving safety equipment on all new vehicles.

Cannabix develops marijuana breathalyzer technologies for law enforcement and the workplace.

Cannabix (BLO) is up by 15 per cent trading at $0.69 per share as of 9:43 am EST.
