Transportation technology stock Quarterhill (TSX:QTRH) just signed a contract to help improve road safety and foster the regulatory environment.
Quarterhill will supply weigh-in-motion (WIM) technology to Brussels Mobility, in collaboration with Belgium-based technology integrator Jacops NV.
This joint project will see Quarterhill responsible for the design and supply of the WIM subsystem, along with providing technical support and training. Additionally, Quarterhill will equip Jacops with the necessary software for commercial vehicle monitoring and enforcement.
The WIM system will be installed at the Brussels-Capital Region weigh station on the E19 highway. This dynamic weighing station aims to pre-select overloaded vehicles for enforcement, enhancing the efficiency of inspections by screening vehicles at highway speeds before they reach the law enforcement inspection site. The system will generate real-time data, offering an accurate picture of the vehicles on the highway.
The main goal of this initiative is to reduce the number of overloaded vehicles on Brussels Region’s roads. Overloading leads to rapid road deterioration, more severe accidents, and unfair competition among transport companies. Quarterhill’s technology addresses these issues by identifying overweight vehicles and optimizing enforcement resources.
The weigh station will monitor four lanes of one-way traffic, recording data on vehicle classification and vehicle tax without disrupting traffic flow. An overview camera will capture images to help enforcement personnel identify flagged vehicles, while an automated number plate reader system will photograph, recognize, store, process, and transmit the number plates of vehicles approaching the station.
Quarterhill’s iSINC WIM controller was chosen for its ability to preselect overweight vehicles, create comprehensive vehicle records, classify vehicles, and ensure continual uptime monitoring and ease of service. The iSINC controller’s versatility allows it to manage various sensors, cameras, dimensioning systems, communication systems, and custom equipment.
WIM sensors meeting the Nmi International WIM standard specifications will be installed, hoping to ensure high durability, stable output, and IP68 water resistance. Quarterhill will guide Jacops on the design and placement of the WIM system components, providing onsite technical support for installation, testing, and initial calibration. Comprehensive training on the WIM components and system calibration will also be provided.
During the two-year warranty period, Quarterhill will offer remote diagnostics and technical support to ensure continuous uptime and optimal performance of the system. This project marks a significant step towards improving road safety and infrastructure in the Brussels-Capital Region.
“We have a longstanding relationship with Jacops as a customer for our microwave sensor products, and this project demonstrates how having a broad portfolio of traffic technologies and established relationships with traffic system integrators leads to further opportunities,” Quarterhill’s CEO, Chuck Myers explained in a media release.
Earlier this week, the company announced that it had signed a US$40 million contract to upgrade the Alameda County Transportation Commission’s I-580 express lanes in California.
Quarterhill provides tolling and enforcement solutions in the intelligent transportation systems industry.
Quarterhill stock (TSX:QTRH) last traded at C$1.67 and has kept unchanged since the week began.
