Canada’s main stock index, heavily weighted toward natural resources, grew mildly on Wednesday, attempting to recoup some losses from the previous day. While some losses was driven by continued weakness in metal prices and lingering concerns over trade and geopolitical tensions, industrials and tech provided some lift.

Meanwhile, US investors sifted through a wave of fresh earnings reports. Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) shares tumbled 10 per cent after the company reported disappointing earnings, while Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) surged nearly 14 per cent thanks to strong revenue and profit figures.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.47 cents US compared to 71.32 cents US on Tuesday.

US crude futures traded US$2.00 higher at US$59.24 a barrel, and the Brent contract rose US$2.02 to US$63.34 a barrel.

The price of gold was down US$4.86 to US$4,092.95.

In world markets, the Nikkei was down 8.27 points to ¥49,307.79, the Hang Seng was down 245.78 points to HK$25,781.77, the FTSE was up 88.01 points to ₤9,515.00, and the DAX was down 178.90 points to €24,151.13.
