Canadian equities moved higher on Tuesday as optimism over mediation efforts in the Middle East bolstered risk appetite. However, investors remained focused on the latest trade developments after President Donald Trump announced a 50 per cent tariff on a wide range of Canadian imports, accusing Canada of discriminating against American-made vehicles, alcohol, and dairy products.

Geopolitical tensions also remained elevated. US forces carried out a 10th consecutive night of strikes on Iranian targets after Trump declared the ceasefire over. Iran has responded with attacks on US military assets across the Middle East, while its Houthi allies have imposed a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia.
