  • System1 stock (NYSE:SST) jumped 25% Thursday as MapQuest surged to the No. 1 navigation app in the U.S. following a spike in downloads
  • MapQuest kept the Lake Ontario name on its maps, attracting hundreds of thousands of new users and boosting usage to roughly 50 times normal levels
  • Google Maps faced backlash after displaying “Lake America” for U.S. users, prompting some consumers to switch to MapQuest
  • System1 stock (NYSE:SST) last traded at US$3.86

System1 (NYSE:SST) shares surged after its MapQuest business saw a dramatic spike in app downloads, fuelled by backlash over the controversial renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on competing mapping platforms.

The stock closed 25% higher on Thursday and followed that up with another gain over 2.5% on Friday.

MapQuest, the online mapping service launched in 1996 and owned by System1, has unexpectedly emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the debate surrounding President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America.

The company said it has experienced a flood of new users after refusing to adopt the new name and continuing to display Lake Ontario on its maps.

The move appears to have resonated with consumers. MapQuest said hundreds of thousands of downloads pushed usage to roughly 50 times normal levels, helping the app climb to the No. 1 position among free navigation applications in both Apple’s App Store and Google Play in the United States.

“It is the highest chart position in the brand’s 30-year history,” the company wrote in an addendum.

For investors, the sudden resurgence of a legacy internet brand translated into a strong market reaction. Shares of System1 were up 25% in Thursday trading as investors responded to the unexpected surge in user engagement and renewed visibility for the MapQuest platform.

Data from app analytics firm Sensor Tower highlights the speed of MapQuest’s ascent. Just one week earlier, the app ranked around 80th among free navigation apps on iOS in the U.S. market and failed to crack the top 150 in Canada. By Sunday, it had climbed to the No. 1 position in both countries.

The gains come as Google Maps faces criticism from some users after updating its platform to display “Lake America” for U.S. users, following changes in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) conceded that users in the United States would see “Lake America,” Canadian users would continue to see “Lake Ontario,” and users outside both countries would see both names displayed.

The decision sparked backlash across social media, particularly among users opposed to the renaming. Some online commentators encouraged others to switch to MapQuest, framing the company’s refusal to change the lake’s name as a stand against political pressure.

Many Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) users voiced their support for MapQuest in widely shared posts.

The controversy echoes last year’s debate over the Gulf of Mexico, which was renamed the Gulf of America by the Trump administration and later updated by major mapping providers.

MapQuest has leaned into the attention, maintaining an active presence on X and posting messages that highlight its decision to keep familiar geographic names intact. The company has also indicated that support for Android Auto is in development, a move that could help it retain some of its newly acquired users.

Enjoying life on the fence, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has yet to announce whether Apple Maps will adopt the Lake America designation. As of earlier this week, the service continued to display Lake Ontario. Reuters reported that Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said President Trump had reached out directly to Apple regarding the change.

For System1 investors, the key question is whether the current momentum can translate into sustained engagement and monetization. While the download surge may be tied to a politically charged news cycle, the episode has given MapQuest its highest level of visibility in years and briefly positioned a decades-old internet brand at the centre of a national conversation.

Whether the spike proves temporary or marks the beginning of a broader comeback, MapQuest’s unexpected rise has already delivered a significant boost to System1’s stock price.

MapQuest’s owners, System1 Inc. provides omnichannel customer acquisition platform services through its proprietary responsive acquisition marketing platform in the United States and internationally.

System1 stock (NYSE:SST) last traded at US$3.86 and though it is down 3% since the year began, it has risen 24% over the past three months and ends the week more than 100% higher.
