MetalQuest Mining Inc. (TSXV: MQM; OTCQB: MQMIF) has applied to the Province of Ontario for a 21-year mining lease over the former Timminco Metals/Dominion Magnesium property near Haley Station in Renfrew County, Ontario.

The company said the application, dated August 21, 2026, was submitted to the Provincial Mining Recorder under subsection 176(3) of Ontario’s Mining Act. MetalQuest said the Ontario Ministry of Energy and Mines acknowledged the application by letter dated August 28, 2026, and that the company paid a $1,200 application fee on September 9, 2026.

MetalQuest emphasized that it does not currently hold a mining lease, mining claim, or any other interest in the site lands, and there is no assurance a lease will be granted. The company described the lands as Crown-owned, recorded in Ontario’s Abandoned Mines Information System, and withdrawn from mining claim registration, meaning they are not open to staking.

Under subsection 176(3), MetalQuest said a lease is discretionary and may be issued only on terms and conditions the Minister considers appropriate and only with the approval of the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The company expects its application to face review under the Ministry’s Class Environmental Assessment process, a posting on the Environmental Registry of Ontario, and Crown consultation with Indigenous communities, adding that the timing and outcome cannot be predicted.

MetalQuest also said the Ministry has advised that, as the first applicant, its application will be reviewed before any subsequent application, while noting that priority of review is not an assurance of approval.

Former Haley Station magnesium operation and historical information

According to MetalQuest, the Haley Station site began producing magnesium in 1942 using the Pidgeon process and operated for more than six decades before closing in 2008. The company cited Ontario Geological Survey publications that report cumulative output of about 475 million pounds (about 215,000 metric tonnes) of magnesium metal to the end of 1980, and noted this is historical production rather than a measure of remaining mineral resources.

MetalQuest said it has not established a current mineral resource or mineral reserve for the property and is not treating historical estimates as current mineral resources or reserves. It also said the original historical sampling and analytical records and production records have not been independently reviewed or confirmed for the release, and no new sampling was reported.

What MetalQuest requested and next steps

MetalQuest said it asked the Ministry to issue a 21-year mining lease covering the mining rights and, where available, the surface rights of the former property; take steps necessary to move the lands out of abandoned-mine status; release the Ministry’s geological, engineering, closure, rehabilitation and environmental records for the property; and advise the company of the terms, conditions, rentals, royalties, security and process that would apply.

If it obtains the necessary tenure and approvals, MetalQuest outlined a staged evaluation plan that starts with compiling and assessing historical information, followed by field confirmation work that could include mapping, sampling, drilling and metallurgical testing, subject to authorizations, results, access, permitting and financing.

MetalQuest describes itself as a Canadian exploration company focused on iron and critical minerals.
