- An employee at the First Quantum Minerals’ (TSX:FM) Kansanshi operation in Zambia has died after a traffic accident, the company announced Monday.
- First Quantum has notified the Mine Safety Department and local authorities about the accident and will cooperate in their investigations.
- The site of the accident was immediately secured and operations in the area of the accident have been temporarily suspended
- Shares of First Quantum Minerals Ltd. are up 0.28 per cent, trading at C$17.89 as of 9:42 am ET.
An employee at the First Quantum Minerals’ (TSX:FM) Kansanshi operation in Zambia has died after a traffic accident involving a tracked dozer and a light vehicle, the company announced Monday.
According to a news release, First Quantum has notified the Mine Safety Department and relevant local authorities about the accident and will fully cooperate in their investigations. First Quantum stated it has also begun an internal investigation into the accident.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of our colleague and I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. We will ensure that the family and all those affected by the accident will receive the necessary support during this difficult time,” Tristan Pascall, First Quantum chief executive officer, said in a statement. “The safety and health of our workforce is our top priority and we are committed to continuously improve our safety practices.”
The site of the accident was immediately secured and operations in the area of the accident have been temporarily suspended and will resume once it is determined that it can be done so in a safe manner, according to First Quantum’s news release.
The past year has been difficult for First Quantum Minerals, which had two workers killed in separate accidents in November at Kansanshi and Sentinel in Zambia. It also had its huge Cobre Panama copper mine shut down because of an order by the Panamanian government, and the company put smaller mines up for sale.
First Quantum Minerals Ltd. is a Canada-based global copper company. It is engaged in the production of copper, nickel, gold and silver, and related activities including exploration and development.
