Kraken Robotics (TSXV:PNG), an innovator in marine technology, has announced the launch of its synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) service tailored for the global offshore energy market. Starting July 2025, Kraken’s commercial services team will offer dedicated KATFISH towed SAS systems for rental, marking a significant expansion in their service offerings.

“While the KATFISH has been used successfully as a service in the defense market for many years, we are pleased to have multiple assets we can introduce to the commercial market,” Lynne Adu, Kraken’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer said in a news release. “SAS offers a significant increase in resolution and range compared to sidescan sonar, and there is already a lot of interest for applications like pre- and post- offshore construction survey and underwater infrastructure inspection.”

“Over the next 20 years, we are expected to see a five times increase in demand for commercial survey services in the offshore wind industry,” Chris Almond, vice president of business development for Kraken’s services, added. “At the same time, we are being challenged to decrease our carbon footprint. The KATFISH system can survey larger areas faster than current solutions, decreasing the amount of vessel time needed and therefore reducing carbon production with the added benefit of decreased survey costs.”

The KATFISH towed SAS, which debuted seven years ago, has been widely adopted for various applications, including mine countermeasure operations, critical underwater infrastructure inspections, and harbor surveys. The system is renowned for its real-time 3 cm x 3 cm resolution and a range of up to 200 meters per side, delivering some of the highest area coverage rates in the industry. This high resolution enables the differentiation between manmade and natural contacts and the identification of small contacts near infrastructure, thereby reducing project risks.

Kraken’s SAS service has recently been selected by Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, the UK’s premier technology innovation and research center for offshore renewable energy, to join its Launch Academy. This selection provides Kraken with access to world-class testing and research programs and opportunities to collaborate with industry, academia, and government to position SAS survey services for the offshore wind industry.

Following the acquisition of 3D at Depth, Kraken Robotics now operates a global offshore services business from the UK and the U.S. The global SAS services will be managed from Kraken’s Aberdeen, UK office, which also offers sub-seabed imaging services using its Sub-Bottom Imager™ and Acoustic Corer™ technologies. With a team of over 30 employees in the UK, Kraken successfully completed more than 20 service projects in 2024, delivering high-quality sub-bottom imaging data to clients across 13 countries.

Kraken is a marine technology company providing complex subsea sensors, batteries and robotic systems.

Kraken Robotics stock (TSXV:PNG) last traded at C$2.14 and has risen 94.55 per cent since this time last year.
