Quintessential Canadian clothing brand Roots (TSX:ROOT) is partnering with Canadian NCAA basketball star Toby Fournier of Duke University, who will become the company’s first female activewear ambassador.

Fournier first gained fame at 14 for a viral dunk followed by a memorable performance the following year at the FIBA World Basketball Summit. The 6-foot-2 power forward went on to help Team Canada win a bronze at the U19 Women’s FIBA World Cup in 2023, averaging 16 points and 14 rebounds, and earn herself the 10th spot in ESPN’s Class of 2024, committing to Duke University. She won Duke’s sixth ACC Rookie of the Year award in 2024, in addition to spots on the All-ACC First Team and ACC All-Freshman Team.

Under the partnership agreement, Fournier will appear in marketing content and represent Roots activewear both on and off the court, underscoring the company’s commitment to “broadening the playing field in athletics,” according to Tuesday’s news release.

The news follows Roots’ partnership with the WNBA announced in January.

She is a true rising star in the world of women’s basketball, and as a brand that has always celebrated athletics, we are thrilled to have her join the Roots family. Through this partnership, we aim to inspire young athletes across Canada and beyond and share with more people the high quality and thoughtfully crafted breadth of our activewear products,” Leslie Golts, chief marketing officer at Roots, said in a statement.

“I’ve been wearing Roots since I was a kid, and it’s always been a brand that stands for quality, comfort and style,” Fournier added. “For me, Roots represents authenticity and the freedom to move without limits. As I push myself to new heights in basketball, I’m honoured to align with a brand that values both innovation and purpose. I’m so excited to share this journey with the Roots community!”
