Teck’s Copper & Health program

Teck Resources (TECK.A) and Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) has partnered to outfit ROM with innovative antimicrobial copper surfaces.

The partnership will build awareness around the health benefits of copper. ROM is the first museum in Canada to incorporate antimicrobial copper, which kills bacteria and reduces the spread of infection. It helps create a safer environment for visitors and staff.

Through its Copper & Health program, Teck has donated $500,000 to ROM. Part of it is to outfit high-traffic areas with antimicrobial copper surfaces known as CuVerro Shield by Aereus Technologies. The remainder of the funding will go towards an interactive digital educational program to explain the health benefits of copper.

The educational program will illustrate the important role copper plays today and for the low-carbon future. The initiative will become part of the curriculum-based programs at ROM. Copper has unique antimicrobial properties. It is proven effective in eliminating up to 99.9 per cent of harmful bacteria within two hours of contact.

This ROM and Teck initiative is the latest in a series of contributions through Teck’s Copper & Health program. Other partnerships include numerous B.C. hospitals, post-secondary educational institutions, Vancouver International Airport, and public transit in Vancouver and Toronto.

The goal of the program is to improve health and safety for communities. Teck has no commercial benefit from the increased use of antimicrobial copper as the amount of metal needed is minimal.

Headquartered in Vancouver, Teck is one of Canada’s leading mining companies. It commits to responsible mining and mineral development with business units focused on copper, zinc, steelmaking coal, and investments in energy assets.

Teck Resources Ltd. (TECK.A) is down 0.74 per cent, trading at C$34.99 per share at 2:45 pm ET.
