Canadian stocks were little changed Thursday as a surge in global government bond yields pressured investor sentiment. Traders also looked ahead to upcoming retail sales data for a clearer picture of consumer spending trends in Canada. The loonie continued its descent.

US equities moved lower on average as Treasury yields continued to climb, reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve could maintain a tighter monetary policy stance.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.70 cents US compared to 70.92 cents US on Wednesday.

US crude futures traded US$2.85 higher at US$95.01 a barrel, and the Brent contract rose US$4.15 to US$107.20 a barrel.

The price of gold was down US$12.32 to US$4,270.06.

In world markets, the Nikkei was up 495.04 points to ¥65,513.99, the Hang Seng was down 72.99 points to HK$24,761.13, the FTSE was down 25.27 points to ₤10,679.99, and the DAX was down 144.10 points to €25,266.53.
