South of the border, US stocks also sank as oil markets reacted to mixed signals regarding the ongoing US-Iran dispute. President Donald Trump disclosed that officials from both countries held talks during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, praising the discussions while simultaneously threatening strong action should negotiations fail.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.92 cents US compared to 71.09 cents US on Tuesday.
US crude futures traded US$2.31 higher at US$92.83 a barrel, and the Brent contract rose US$4.31 to US$103.61 a barrel.
The price of gold was down US$55.89 to US$4,283.69.
In world markets, the Nikkei remained at ¥65,018.95, the Hang Seng was down 253.63 points to HK$24,834.12, the FTSE was up 17.06 points to ₤10,725.39, and the DAX was down 168.22 points to €25,410.53.
