The Toronto Stock Exchange rebounded from two down days to register its first gains of the new year Thursday. The TSX was up 0.25 per cent, the TSXV gained 0.27 per cent and the CSE climbed 0.85 per cent as technology and industrials led the strongest sectors and the energy sector dipped after surging a day before.

U.S. markets disappointed again with only the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising, and just barely at 0.03 per cent. The NASDAQ fell 0.56 per cent and the S&P 500 dropped 0.34 per cent.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.90 cents U.S. compared to 74.87 cents U.S. on Wednesday.

U.S. crude futures traded $0.40 lower at $72.30 a barrel, and the Brent contract lost $0.66 to $77.59 a barrel.

The price of gold was up US$8.40 to US$2,051.20.

In world markets, the Nikkei was down 175.88 points to 33,288.29, the Hang Seng was down 0.43 points to 16,645.98, the FTSE was up 40.74 points to 7,723.07, and the DAX was up 78.90 points to 16,617.29.
