Thunder Gold (TSXV:TGOL) has named Canadian Olympian Donovan Bailey to its board of directors.

Bailey took home two gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, one in the men’s 4 x 100-metre relay, the other by breaking the world record for the 100-metre sprint with a time of 9.84 seconds, becoming the first man in history to be Olympic champion, world champion and a world record holder.

According to Thursday’s news release, Bailey’s business acumen rivals his athletic prowess, which has led him to strategically maintain a strong public image while building connections across the global business community through his Bailey Inc. organization.

Bailey intends to leverage his image to increase awareness of Thunder’s 2,100-hectare Tower Mountain project, located near Thunder Bay, Ontario, which pairs readily accessible hydro, roads, rail and talent with a mineral resource estimated at 514,000 ounces of gold indicated and 3.05 million ounces inferred, representing more than US$16 billion in the ground at the price per ounce at the time of writing.

The company is currently drilling Tower Mountain with eyes on resource definition and expansion, recently adding an additional 7,500 metres to the program following a successful C$2.5 million capital raise led by a strategic investor.

Management commentary

“I was introduced to Thunder Gold by their CFO, who I have known for many years. Not only was it an easy story to follow but the upside potential is extremely attractive. I know that I can help to raise the profile of the company and likely get meaningful eyes on it. This could be one of Canada’s biggest discoveries and I want to be part of building this exciting Ontario gold story,” Bailey said in a statement.

“We are very pleased to have Donovan Bailey join our board of directors. He has a solid business mind and maintains the same discipline and focus that he drew on to succeed in his sport. His enthusiasm to support Thunder Gold is very encouraging. We look forward to working with Donovan as we evolve Thunder Gold’s Tower Mountain towards a tier-1 gold property,” added Wes Hanson, president and chief executive officer of Thunder Gold.
