Westons agreed to buy Boots for US$8.9 billion as stocks fell from records and the 10-year Treasury yield hit a 2002 high.

Markets retreated broadly today as Wall Street pulled back from record highs and stocks fell worldwide. The TSX dropped 0.93% and the TSX Venture Index fell 1.53%, while the Dow slid 0.98% and the Nasdaq lost 1.03%. The FTSE 100 slipped 0.73% as the selling extended overseas, following a session in which the S&P 500 notched its first close above 7,800.

The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since 2002, adding to the pressure on equities. Oil rose 1.47% while gold dropped 1.74% and copper eased 0.38%, and Bitcoin tumbled 2.77% to just above C$118,000. At home, Toronto-area home sales fell 9% in September as hopes of a fall housing recovery faded, while Canada’s trade surplus with the U.S. nearly doubled to $11.2 billion.
