If you’re keen on allocating a meaningful percentage of your portfolio to micro-cap stocks, perhaps motivated by success stories you’ve read on Stockhouse’s Bullboards and ADVFN’s InvestorHub, among other forums of choice, high conviction should be your guiding light.

To achieve it, you must run target companies through a due diligence process designed to select for those best equipped to not only survive but thrive over the long term, which is the epitome of something sounding easier said than done.

This article is disseminated in partnership with micro-cap stocks Sono-Tek Corp. and Marvel Biosciences Corp. It is intended to inform investors and should not be taken as a recommendation or financial advice.

However, while every investor will approach the markets a little differently, the tell-tale signs of companies with strong longevity potential fall within a shared universe built on solid investment fundamentals. A few foundational pillars might include:

  • Growth in revenue and profits.
  • Differentiated products that solve a consumer problem more efficiently than what’s available today.
  • Pessimistically priced stocks, clearly dislocated from company potential, offering you a discounted entry point to put capital to work.
  • Experienced leadership teams with backbones strong enough to withstand even the most vertigo-inducing market volatility.

Despite this shared universe, worthwhile companies will still appear in a variety of shapes and sizes, just like the investors that discover them, each justifying their conviction in line with the realities of the industries they’re in.

In the latest edition of Stockhouse’s Weekly Market Movers, I’ll examine two promising micro-cap stocks, whose underlying companies are soundly constructed, but may as well be operating on different planets in terms of how they may catalyze long-term shareholder value.

Sono-Tek

Sono-Tek, market cap US$81.91 million, has staked its claim in the investment landscape as the world’s top provider of utrasonic coating systems, which apply thin films of specialized material onto parts across a diversity of industries, including medicine, manufacturing, microelectronics and renewable energy. The company satisfies a list of use-cases far longer than the average investor (i.e. me) could surmise. A handful of interesting ones include:

  • Conductive oxide layers, buffer layers and anti-reflection coatings in solar cells.
  • Drug delivery from coronary stents and microneedle patches.
  • Water and oil repellent, antimicrobial and anti-stain finishes on textiles.
  • Cleaning circuit boards during their printing process.
  • Protective coatings during semiconductor manufacturing.

Sono-Tek’s scalable, proprietary, full-service offering, built upon more than half a century in business, stands out from competitors by using less water and energy, while improving process repeatability, a combo that has allowed it to build a loyal client base representing a ~50% share of the global ultrasonic coating equipment market – as detailed in the latest investor deck – not to mention an impressive financial track record to substantiate its value to the market. Let’s paint a picture of the company’s progress from fiscal 2021 to fiscal 2026:

  • Revenue has grown from US$14.8 million to US$20.9 million over the period.
  • Gross margins have remained remarkably stable for a high-tech company, hovering between 47-51%.
  • Net income rose from US$1.1 million to US$1.8 million.
  • Cash on hand has also climbed, nearly doubling from US$7.9 million to US$14.8 million, while holding no long-term debt.

Sales carried on along their upward trajectory in fiscal Q1 and Q2 2027, amid continued profitability, driven by strong medical demand and a focus on higher-value production systems, building upon a more than 1,300% increase in orders of more than US$150,000 from 2017 to date.

Guided by a leadership team highly aligned with shareholders at 16% insider ownership, the company remains squarely focused on market expansion and product innovation, propelled by a record backlog of US$9.51 million as of August 2026, keen to extend its history of sustainable long-term growth.

Sono-Tek stock (NASDAQ:SOTK) last traded at US$4.81, adding 4.57% year-over-year, while giving back 18.06% since 2021.

Stephen Harshbarger, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sono-Tek, sat down with Ricki Lee to discuss the company’s rapidly accelerating scale. Watch the interview here.

Marvel Biosciences

Unlike Sono-Tek’s path to value creation through its income statements, our second standout micro-cap stock, the pre-revenue Marvel Biosciences, market cap C$8.86 million, is courting investor favor exclusively through the attractiveness of its assets.

As a clinical-stage biotech company, Marvel’s main focus is delivering on development milestones, gradually building a case for its flagship MB-204 – a derivative of the approved anti-Parkinson’s drug, Istradefylline, the only clinically approved adenosine A2a antagonist – to progress through the decade-long clinical trials process and into market.

Building upon robust scientific literature supporting the treatment of neurological diseases, including autism, depression and Alzheimer’s Disease, with drugs that block the adenosine A2a receptor, a key regulator of brain activity, the company has successfully shown MB-204 to lead to behavioral and cognitive improvements in mouse models studying Rett Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, Phelan-McDermid Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder, putting it in the early-stage running, as detailed in Marvel’s 2026 investor deck, to capitalize on a market spanning up to 1.5 million patients valued at up to US$18 billion per year.

MB-204’s steady progress has justified ongoing efforts to test it in a phase-1, first-in-human program in Australia in partnership with CMAX, the country’s longest-running clinical research facility, with more than 600 studies conducted since inception in 1993.

The proposed program will evaluate the drug candidate’s safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic profile in humans, while assessing potential biomarkers and cognitive endpoints, with eyes on conducting a subsequent multiple-ascending-dose study.

Subject to regulatory and ethics approvals, the phase-1 program could generate enough evidence to support the planning of a phase-2 trial in as soon as one year’s time.

Should news flow turn out to be positive, as pre-clinical results suggest, MB-204 would take a significant step away from theoretical potential towards life-changing therapy, providing a strong justification to turn market sentiment around, guided by a leadership team whose flair for capital markets (>$1 billion raised), drug development (>12 patents authored) and financial oversight makes it fit to the task.

Marvel Biosciences stock (TSXV:MRVL) last traded at C$0.12, giving back 45.45% year-over-year and 52% since 2021.

Mark Williams, Director, President and Chief Science Officer of Marvel Biosciences, spoke with Ricki Lee to chart the company’s path forward. Watch the interview here.
