Element One Hydrogen & Critical Minerals (CSE:EONE) is advancing a new real-time hydrogen production technology that could radically increase industry output.
The patent-pending, low-carbon process is designed for naturally occurring rock systems and focuses on spinel oxide catalysts – derived from iron and nickel-bearing rocks such as olivine – which have been shown in lab tests to accelerate hydrogen production by up to 1,000 times.
These catalysts avoid the high temperatures and extended timeframes required by conventional production methods, suggesting that significant improvements to the economics of natural hydrogen development may be on the horizon.
The technology’s applicability in both in-situ ultramafic and above-ground mined rock environments grants the company a broad resource base to garner market share, with field testing planned for the near future.
Leadership commentary
“This breakthrough represents a major milestone in unlocking the potential of natural hydrogen,” Tim Johnson, chief operating officer of Element One, said in Tuesday’s news release. “By creating catalysts directly from the rocks themselves, we are significantly improving reaction efficiency while reducing the need for external inputs. This positions Element One at the forefront of next-generation hydrogen production technologies.”
