Despite a muted performance among the broader market, the TSX climbed to a new historic high on Thursday as investors reacted to new earnings reports and cooling US producer price inflation data.
US markets delivered a solid performance after the July PPI report unexpectedly held steady, falling short of expectations for a 0.2 per cent rise. At the same time, oil prices slipped, and traders sifted through another wave of earnings reports.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.74 cents US compared to 71.71 cents US on Wednesday.
US crude futures traded US$2.09 lower at US$81.18 a barrel, and the Brent contract lost US$2.03 to US$86.95 a barrel.
The price of gold was down US$55.94 to US$4,349.71.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 784.53 points to ¥68,308.59, the Hang Seng was down 43.66 points to HK$25,396.51, the FTSE was down 60.48 points to ₤10,772.67, and the DAX was down 31.33 points to €26,299.74.
