It was almost another day in the red for Canada’s main stock index on Thursday, but weaker crude prices turned around by midday trading and energy shares jumped, pushing the TSX higher as investors worried about soaring domestic inflation.. The financial sector moved lower.
A sign of more selling on Wall Street, US stock index futures fell as investors kept a close eye on the impact of rising inflation on the economy and corporate earnings. Initial jobless claims rose by 21,000 to 218,000 last week. High-growth stocks led the sell-off as investors scramble to adjust to tightening financial conditions. The S&P 500 closed on the brink of a bear market.
The Canadian dollar traded for 78.06 cents US compared to 77.86 cents US on Wednesday.
Crude oil prices were up 2.03 to $111.60.
The price of gold was up 26.37 to $1,847.66.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 508.36 points to 26,402.84 the Hang Seng was down 523.60 points to 20,120.68 the FTSE was down 135.35 points to 7,302.74, and the DAX was down 125.46 points to 13,882.30.
