Canada’s leading stock index lost more ground on Thursday as falling gold prices dampened market performance and investors monitored whether support from the US Treasury would be enough to alleviate concerns surrounding global bond markets. At the same time, Canada and the United States appeared to be nearing a trade agreement that could reduce some contentious US tariffs on Canadian-built vehicles and major metal products.

US crude oil prices climbed sharply after President Donald Trump announced plans for what he called the toughest economic action ever imposed on a country, targeting Iran. In a social media post, he said the initiative would amount to economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented level.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.51 cents US compared to 72.39 cents US on Wednesday.

US crude futures traded US$2.31 higher at US$86.70 a barrel, and the Brent contract rose US$1.99 to US$93.61 a barrel.

The price of gold was up US$36.65 to US$4,523.76.

In world markets, the Nikkei was up 890.37 points to ¥66,216.79, the Hang Seng was up 203.42 points to HK$25,698.49, the FTSE was up 4.81 points to ₤10,748.16, and the DAX was down 108.29 points to €26,983.04.
