Canada’s main stock index finished modestly in the green on Monday thanks to strength in the technology sector. Lower oil prices supported market sentiment, while investors closely watched remarks from the Bank of Canada’s governor for insight into the central bank’s next policy moves.

Governor Tiff Macklem told a crowd in Halifax that Canadian businesses and households have helped the economy recover by adapting to trade disruptions, AI adoption, and demographic shifts, but renewed US trade tensions and persistent Middle East-driven energy price increases are creating new risks to growth and inflation, prompting the Bank of Canada to carefully balance economic support with its commitment to keeping inflation near its 2% target.

South of the border, US stocks moved higher as Treasury yields declined, helping Wall Street recover some ground after a mostly weaker week.
