Markets were mixed today as tech names extended their rebound from last week’s Fed-driven selloff while the TSX and Dow slipped. The TSX fell 0.28% and the Dow dropped 0.42%, while the Nasdaq rose 0.17% and the TSX Venture Index gained 0.15%. The FTSE 100 was the weak spot, tumbling 1.38%.
Oil rose 1.32% amid record diesel prices hitting the West Coast hardest, while gold ticked up 0.24% and copper gained 0.57%. Bitcoin jumped 4.99% to above C$112,000. The yen tumbled further after the Bank of Japan failed to convince traders it’s serious about rate hikes, while at home Canada committed $150 million to AI safety efforts and Prime Minister Carney embraced the EU’s associate membership proposal as odds of a Bank of Canada rate hike this year climbed.
