Markets are broadly higher this morning as investors look ahead to a key jobs report. The TSX is up 0.74% to 36,091.61, led higher by strength in basic materials, while the TSX Venture Index is gaining 0.61% to 962.50. In the U.S., the Dow is up 0.65% and the Nasdaq is up 0.23%, with S&P 500 futures also firmer and bond yields retreating ahead of the data. London’s FTSE 100 is leading the pack, up 0.86%.

Gold is surging 2.08% as fresh U.S. tariffs on Chinese drones and lingering trade tensions boost safe-haven demand, while copper is also higher and WTI crude and natural gas are both slightly softer. Bitcoin is up 1.25%, trading above C$108,000. On the currency front, the Loonie is firmer against the U.S. dollar, pound, and euro, while the yen has surged to a one-month high on Bank of Japan rate-hike bets. Canada also posted a $769-million merchandise trade surplus in July, even as exports declined.
