Avalon Advanced Materials(TSX:AVL) announced a new partnership with Lakehead University aimed at advancing critical minerals research, processing innovation and workforce development in Northwestern Ontario.

The companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that establishes a framework for collaboration as Ontario’s critical minerals processing sector continues to grow. The agreement will focus on identifying opportunities that support Avalon’s proposed Lake Superior Lithium refinery development in Thunder Bay while helping strengthen the region’s position within the critical minerals supply chain.

Under the terms of the MOU, Avalon and Lakehead University will explore joint initiatives in critical minerals research and innovation, particularly in areas related to lithium processing and the development of associated technologies. The collaboration will also assess how the university’s analytical, testing and laboratory facilities can contribute to research, process development and commercialization efforts linked to Avalon’s proposed on-site Technology Innovation Centre.

A major component of the agreement centers on workforce development. The partners plan to engage on current and future talent requirements within the critical minerals industry and examine ways to align academic programming and training opportunities with sector needs. Potential initiatives include experiential learning opportunities, professional development programs and the possible creation of a new mineral processing engineering stream within Lakehead University’s degree offerings.

The MOU is designed to help address the growing demand for skilled workers as investment in critical minerals projects accelerates across Northern Ontario. By connecting industry needs with educational resources, both organizations aim to support long-term economic development and ensure a pipeline of qualified talent for the expanding sector.

“Avalon has long believed that Northern Ontario has the potential to become a leading hub for critical minerals processing, particularly lithium, given its proximity to mineral resources and established transportation and distribution networks,” Avalon’s president and CEO, Scott Monteith, commented in a media statement. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Lakehead University to help advance this vision and ensure the region is well positioned to capture the economic, innovation and workforce opportunities that come with this growing industry.”

In addition to research and workforce initiatives, Avalon and Lakehead will explore collaborative funding opportunities through provincial, federal and industry-backed research and innovation programs. The agreement also encourages knowledge-sharing activities involving Avalon employees, Lakehead faculty, researchers and students through internships, workshops, graduate research projects and other collaborative programs.

The partnership reflects increasing efforts across Canada to strengthen domestic critical minerals processing capabilities, particularly for materials such as lithium that are essential to electric vehicle batteries and the broader energy transition.

Avalon’s proposed Lake Superior Lithium refinery is expected to play a key role in Ontario’s emerging battery materials ecosystem, while the collaboration with Lakehead University seeks to reinforce Thunder Bay’s growing reputation as a hub for critical minerals innovation, research and skilled workforce development.

Avalon Advanced Materials Inc., together with its subsidiaries, engages in the acquisition, exploration, evaluation, and development of specialty and critical minerals properties in Canada and the United States.

Avalon Advanced Materials stock (TSX:AVL) last traded at C$7.38 and fell 2.74% in early trading while also having lost more than 25% since the start of the year.
