Barrick Mining drives consolidation in Nevada
In Nevada, Barrick Mining is setting the pace. Through an agreement with Newmont in August, the group reorganised the ownership structure of the Nevada Gold Mines joint venture. According to reports in the industry magazine Mining Weekly, Barrick contributed the high-grade Fourmile project to the joint venture. In return, Newmont transferred its own development projects into the structure and paid Barrick an equalisation payment of USD 1.95 billion. As the operator with a 61.5% stake, Barrick Mining therefore runs an integrated gold complex with nearly 100 million ounces and intends to list its North American assets separately by the end of the year. According to CEO Mark Hill, the date could slip into January. According to company reports, a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) outlines a mine life of more than 25 years for Fourmile at all-in sustaining costs (AISC) of USD 650 to 750 per ounce. According to Barrick, a large proportion of the Fourmile ore is considered singly refractory and can be processed more cheaply at Nevada Gold Mines’ existing facilities.
SSR Mining balances liquidity and cost pressure
While Barrick Mining is reshaping the mining landscape through restructuring, SSR Mining, an established mid-tier producer, is deploying cash selectively. According to the official quarterly results, the company generated an adjusted profit of USD 130.7 million in the third quarter and has cash and cash equivalents of USD 1.55 billion. This balance sheet strength stems largely from the sale of its 80% stake in the Çöpler mine in Türkiye for USD 1.5 billion in cash, as disclosed in regulatory filings. Nevertheless, the company is under cost pressure: consolidated AISC rose to USD 2,527 per ounce. In mid-October, SSR Mining announced that it would acquire Roxmore Resources, including the Converse gold project, for USD 464 million in cash. Completion is expected in the fourth quarter. The project adjoins the existing Marigold mine and, according to a technical study by Roxmore, is suitable for conventional heap leaching. The acquisition is intended to unlock operational synergies and consolidate SSR Mining’s position as the third-largest gold producer in the US without creating a dependence on external facilities.
Phenom Resources searches for new Carlin deposits
Investment momentum is also reaching focused junior explorers such as Phenom Resources, which is searching for new deposits in Nevada. Under CEO Paul Cowley and with Carlin expert Dave Mathewson as a director and geological adviser, Phenom is focusing on the Dobbin project in the Monitor Range. According to the company, systematic preliminary work there shows a gold-in-soil anomaly extending over 2.1 km long and 200 m wide. Geochemical analyses returned values of up to 2.73 g/t Au in soil samples, while rock samples from trenches reached up to 10.35 g/t Au, according to Phenom. At the end of July, Phenom began a core drilling programme with approval from the US Forest Service to verify the extension of the surface anomaly at depth. The company suspects that beneath the anomaly lies a steeply dipping fault zone that may have served as a feeder channel for gold-bearing fluids into the underlying carbonate rocks.

Joint venture and the planned spin-off of the vanadium assets
The scale of this geological anomaly piqued SSR Mining’s interest. On September 23, SSR Mining secured a 15% stake in the Dobbin project company for USD 4 million in cash, before the first laboratory results from the core drilling. SSR Mining had already acquired around 9.9% of Phenom for CAD 5.41 million in June. Together with the JV contribution, Phenom has around CAD 11 million, according to CEO Paul Cowley. This funding will support work through the remainder of the 2026 season, with work set to resume in early summer 2027. To sharpen its focus and avoid a conglomerate discount in the capital market, Phenom is also considering spinning off its vanadium assets into a standalone company, according to management. After such a spin-off, Phenom would be a pure-play gold exploration company in a top-tier jurisdiction, which could make it more attractive to producers.
Prospects for exploration companies
The market environment in Nevada shows how the high gold price is not only driving producers to undertake transactions, but is also having a knock-on effect on smaller exploration companies. For junior explorers, even a targeted deployment of capital at an early stage can have a significant leverage effect. Should Phenom Resources’ core drilling confirm the geological model of the feeder structures, SSR Mining’s early investment could pay off. It remains to be seen what the laboratory results will show and whether the gold values measured at surface continue into economically mineable horizons. However, the industry’s focus on the remaining quality assets along the Carlin Trend is likely to ensure that funded explorers continue to attract attention. As a pure-play early-stage junior explorer, Phenom Resources has yet to generate any revenue. The stock remains highly speculative, with its success fundamentally dependent on upcoming drilling results.
