• Technology stocks are moving towards the lagging quadrant in equal-weight sector analysis.
  • Consumer staples, utilities and consumer discretionary stocks are showing improving relative momentum.
  • StoneCastle’s S&P 500 early-warning indicator remains negative, raising concerns about broader market weakness.

Investors appear to be shifting their attention towards more defensive areas of the stock market as technology stocks lose momentum and a closely watched market warning indicator remains negative.

In the November 4 edition of Markets in Motion, Bruce Campbell of StoneCastle Investment Management examines equal-weight sector performance, which gives each company the same influence regardless of its market capitalization.

This article is being disseminated on behalf of StoneCastle Investment Management, a third-party issuer, and is intended for informational purposes only.

His analysis shows technology moving towards the lagging quadrant, while financials are beginning to recover. Utilities, consumer staples and consumer discretionary stocks are also showing improving relative momentum.

Campbell highlights the continued negative reading from StoneCastle’s proprietary S&P 500 early-warning indicator, which turned negative several months ago.

He points to previous signals in 2021, November 2024 and earlier in 2026, each preceding periods of market turbulence.

The improving performance of consumer staples is particularly noteworthy. Investors often favour the sector during uncertain economic conditions because demand for essential goods tends to remain relatively stable.

Campbell also identifies a positive relative-strength signal in equal-weight consumer discretionary stocks, suggesting the rotation is not confined to traditionally defensive sectors.

While these indicators do not guarantee a market downturn, their combination suggests investors may want to pay closer attention to changing sector leadership and portfolio risk.

Watch the full episode above for Campbell’s latest analysis of market rotation and the signals shaping the S&P 500 outlook.
