Markets trade mixed as Sandisk falls despite huge profit growth, RBI posts higher Q2 profit, AtkinsRéalis revenue rises, gold climbs and oil firms.

Markets are mixed today as investors digest another wave of earnings while trimming risk in AI momentum names. The TSX is slightly higher, up 0.06%, while the TSX Venture Index is down 0.16%. In the U.S., the Dow is off 0.18% and the Nasdaq is down 0.35% as AI-linked stocks remain under pressure following a volatile earnings season. London’s FTSE 100 is also lower, slipping 0.19%.

Commodities are mixed as well. Gold is moving higher, up 0.50%, supported by renewed defensive demand and war-end optimism, while oil is also firmer, up nearly 1%. Copper is lower as traders pare exposure to industrial metals, and natural gas is down more than 1%. Bitcoin is slightly weaker in Canadian-dollar terms as speculative assets remain choppy.

In the headlines

  • Sandisk slides despite massive profit growth: Sandisk (NDAQ:SNDK), the memory storage and flash technology company, reported explosive 13,500% profit growth, but its outlook sent the highly volatile stock lower. Investors appear focused on whether AI-driven storage demand can keep pace with stretched expectations.
  • Restaurant Brands posts higher Q2 profit: Restaurant Brands International (TSX:QSR), the parent company of Tim Hortons, Burger King, Popeyes, and Firehouse Subs, reported higher second-quarter profit. Tim Hortons sales growth slowed, but Burger King helped drive overall system-wide growth.
  • AtkinsRéalis profit falls as revenue rises: AtkinsRéalis (TSX:ATRL), the Canadian engineering and infrastructure services company, reported lower second-quarter profit even as revenue rose 10%. The results highlight stronger project activity, but also pressure on margins and year-over-year comparables.
