• Historical copper-to-gold readings and reduced insider selling have previously been followed by strong longer-term market returns.
  • Momentum stocks have rebounded sharply after July’s reversal, highlighting how quickly market leadership can change.
  • Financials, industrials, healthcare and consumer-related sectors are strengthening as the economic outlook improves.

Improving economic outlook broadens market leadership

Markets are showing signs of renewed momentum as investors look beyond recent volatility and focus on a potentially stronger economic backdrop over the coming months.

In this week’s Markets in Motion, Stonecastle Investment Management portfolio manager Bruce Campbell examines the copper-to-gold ratio, which has fallen to a level rarely seen historically.

Research from Sentiment Trader suggests similar readings have previously been followed by positive market returns, including positive outcomes across all observed instances six months and one year later.

Insider selling has also declined to an unusually low level. Campbell notes that comparable periods have historically produced encouraging returns over three-month and one-year timeframes, although previous performance does not guarantee the same outcome this time.

Market leadership is also shifting again. Momentum strategies that suffered in July have rebounded strongly during the first trading sessions of August, demonstrating how quickly capital can rotate between investment styles.

Looking ahead, Hedgeye’s economic framework points toward stronger growth and inflation conditions over the next several months.

Financials and industrials are moving toward market leadership, while healthcare, communications and consumer discretionary stocks are also improving.

Technology remains in the weakening quadrant but continues to outperform the broader market. Campbell says investors should watch whether the sector begins turning back toward leadership as economic conditions strengthen.

The broader message is that improving fundamentals could support a wider group of sectors rather than concentrating gains among a small number of market leaders.
