MDA Space (TSX:MDA), a Canadian space technology company, has announced a major milestone in national space security. In partnership with Ontario-based ThothX Group, MDA Space has been awarded a standing offer by the Department of National Defence (DND) to deliver enhanced Space Domain Awareness (SDA) services, reinforcing Canada’s commitment to safeguarding its space assets in an increasingly congested orbital environment.

This new initiative leverages ThothX’s cutting-edge Earthfence Radar Capability, a ground-based system designed to monitor and characterize space objects in the Geosynchronous belt, approximately 36,000 km above Earth. The radar provides continuous, all-weather coverage and superior object tracking, enabling timely data acquisition and detailed analysis of satellites and orbital debris.

MDA Space will integrate this high-fidelity sensor data into a secure, cloud-based infrastructure, offering real-time insights and operational support to Canadian defence agencies. This fusion of radar technology and data management expertise positions Canada as a global leader in commercial SDA services.

“We are pleased to continue our long-standing partnership with the Department of National Defence in advancing Canada’s space security,” MDA Space’s CEO, Mike Greenley said in a news release. “Our heritage and expertise in Space Domain Awareness is built on decades of operational excellence, innovation, and trusted partnership with Canada’s defence community. As threats in orbit continue to grow, MDA Space remains committed to delivering the mission-critical insight needed to navigate an increasingly complex space environment.”

ThothX CEO and CTO Brendan Quine added, “Together, we are pioneering deep space radar technologies that give operators and regulators the confidence to ensure safe and sustainable use of space. This mission extends the boundaries of space domain awareness.”

Fun fact: Toth was (is?) the Egyptian god of the Moon, wisdom, knowledge, writing, science, magic, and other things.

The new service builds on MDA Space’s work with Sapphire, Canada’s first military satellite and a key contributor to the U.S. Space Surveillance Network. Operated by MDA Space on behalf of DND, Sapphire has been instrumental in providing space situational awareness since its launch.

This collaboration not only enhances Canada’s national security but also signals a strategic move into the global SDA market, where demand for commercial space surveillance solutions is rapidly growing.

MDA Space is a go-to name for robotics, satellite systems and geointelligence for the global space industry, with a pioneering track record spanning more than 450 missions.

MDA Space stock (TSX:MDA) has traded between roughly C$32 to C$34 since the second week of September. Since 2025 began, its stock is up more than 16 per cent and is trading 100 per cent higher than this time last year.
