NU E Power (CSE: NUE) (OTC Pink: NUEPF) (FSE: NUE1) appointed Tony Clement, a Member of Canadian Parliament from 2006 to 2019 and a former Minister of Health, Minister of Industry and President of the Treasury Board, to its Board of Directors.
Clement will apply his decades of public service, as well as his experience as Chair of the Advisory Board of the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Forum, which gathers industry, government and investment leaders to discuss SMR deployment in Canada and abroad, towards NU E’s push into the Prairie provinces, where according to Wednesday’s news release, nuclear power “has become a prominent part of the conversation on new generation.”
This article is a journalistic opinion piece which has been written based on independent research. It is intended to inform investors and should not be taken as a recommendation or financial advice.
This transition is most evident in Saskatchewan’s recently released Delivering Energy Security Through Nuclear Power framework, which aims to transition the province from coal-fired to nuclear power generation to the tune of 2,600 MW by 2050, while evaluating the potential to expand that figure through SMR technology.
Following NU E’s expansion into Saskatchewan in August, the company hopes to parlay Clement’s appointment into new partnerships, both in business and government, to capitalize on the intersection of growing power demand and nuclear’s growing attraction as a pillar of a decarbonized future.
Leadership commentary
“We brought Tony onto the Board for two reasons: his depth of experience in government and public policy, and his leadership in nuclear and SMR development,” Broderick Gunning, Chief Executive Officer of NU E Power, said in a statement. “As NU E deepens its presence in Saskatchewan and across the Prairies, nuclear and SMR technology is increasingly part of the conversation on how new power gets built, alongside hybrid generation that combines solar, battery storage and natural gas. Tony’s guidance will be a significant asset to the company, both in Canada and abroad.”
“I am pleased to join NU E’s Board at a time when nuclear energy is gaining real momentum globally,” Clement added. “Getting major energy projects built in Canada takes alignment between governments, communities and capital. That is where I have spent much of my career, and it is where I expect to be most useful to NU E’s Board as the company develops new generation in Saskatchewan and beyond. I look forward to working with Brodie and the team.”
